With the season drawing to a close the Elliott Banks Browne and the DB Honda Racing Team headed to Culham Park near Oxford for the final round of the Red Bull Pro Nationals with Elliott looking to secure the Pro MX2 Title. After racing the last 2 rounds of the series with a Broken Wrist, he had seen his points lead reduced and went into the event still far from full fitness but knowing that as long as he was somewhere near Mel Pocock, his closest rival in both races he would be Champion. Qualifying saw EBB set the 4th fastest time in the MX2 group despite still struggling with his wrist injury. Race 1 saw a bad start from EBB as he came through on lap 1 in 21st place but he was on the gas and riding through the pain, and soon started picking up places. By lap 5 Elliott had advanced up into 10th place but most importantly he was the 4th MX2 rider in the combined class race and he was also ahead of Pocock. With the pain starting to kick in Elliott dropped a few places in the race as it headed towards the finish, but he only lost 1 MX2 position and he was still ahead of his rival so he rode to a composed finish knowing that by beating Pocock he had a bigger points lead than the 25 on offer in race 2 meaning that he was Champion! With the title secured the MCF and Red Bull Pro National organising team allowed EBB to take to the track for race 2 with the Number 1 plate on his bike instead of his usual 44’s but it didn’t help his start as he got away worse than in the opening race. He came round the opening lap in 27th, he was again on the gas though and after picking up 7 places on the next lap, he steadily charged upto 11th by lap 6, the pack had spread right out by this stage and 11th looked like the best he would get but he soldiered on and grabbed 10th with 4 laps remaining, going on to finish in that position and also as 3rd in MX2. Elliott’s scores of 5th and 3rd gave him 3rd overall for the day and he ended up clinching the title by 27 points over Pocock. After the initial team celebrations and photo’s Elliott reflected on the day by saying, ‘’I’ve had a MEGA day, I took the cast off my wrist on Tuesday…. I’ve had it on 2 weeks, which isn’t long enough, and its still hurting but qualifying went well and I got 4th in MX2 but all the times were pretty close so I was pretty pleased. In the first race I got an awful start, a rider crashed by me but I managed to come through pretty good to start with. My wrist was really hurting though but I knew Pocock was behind me and if I beat him that was the title so I battled on and done it, it was an awesome feeling. Then for the second race I was allowed to run the Number 1 plate, which was cool, but I got another awful start. I came through pretty good again though and did the best I could but from that far back you’re never going to win. It’s been a great day though and I want to thank everybody from the team and all my personal sponsors and my fans for all their help and support in 2011.’’ |
